Seppo T. Aaltonen 1928-2012
Seppo Tapio Aaltonen, a former Clatskanie resident, passed away May 16 in Los Angeles as a result of cardiac arrest. He was 84 years old. Seppo was born Jan. 20, 1928 in Tampere, Finland to Kalle and Lyydia (Joutsimaki) Aaltonen. In 1951, he immigrated to Canada, where he lived for about ten years and learned the auto body trade. Seppo moved to Portland in the early 1960s, along with his first wife and their children. He worked for various employers before starting his own business, Seppo's Auto Body and Paint, in Portland. In July of 1982, Seppo relocated to Clatskanie. Together with his second wife, they made their home on Beaver Falls Road and raised a family. Among his enjoyments were playing the accordion, swimming, saunas and talking with people. Seppo enjoyed traveling internationally. During part of his travels, he helped start an orphanage in Mongolia. Seppo is survived by three daughters, Shirley Clover of Washougal, Kielo Altrogge of Hillsboro and Arja Aaltonen of American Fork, Utah; two sons, John Aaltonen of Washougal and Evan Aaltonen of Clatskanie; his brother, Lasse Aaltonen of Tampere, Finland; his sister, Pirkko Makinen, also of Tampere; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Alpo Aaltonen, Eimo Aaltonen and Oiva Aaltonen. A memorial service is scheduled Saturday, June 23, at 3:30 p.m., at the Kelso-Longview Community Seventh-day Adventist Church, with Pastor Ben Moor officiating. The church is located at 77 Solomon Road, off of Westside Highway in Kelso. Arrangements were handled by Douglass Family Mortuaries in Lynwood, Calif., with interment at Murray Hill Cemetery in Clatskanie.
