Francis Goodall, 85, of New Town died Friday, October 27, 2000 in a Minot Hospital after battling with cancer for a year.
Francis Goodall was born December 24, 1914 at Williston, North Dakota, the son of Winfield John and Margaret (Keogh) Goodall. The family lived and ranched at Sanish on the original Goodall Ranch established in 1896 by great grandpa John Winfield Goodall. Francis married Alice Louise Sullivan on July 15, 1936 at Stanley, ND. They made their living ranching on his father's place in the true Goodall tradition.
In 1954, the Garrison Dam Project forced Francis and family off their ranch. They moved to Beulah where they bought half interest in the Keogh Ranch. In 1956, the family moved back and relocated the ranch two miles up Antelope Creek where it remains to this day. Francis and Alice retired from ranch life in 1979 when they turned the reins over to their daughter Joanne and her husband, Darrel Quale. They then took up residence in New Town.
Francis was a member of the North Dakota Stockmen's Association and served on their advisory council. He was a member of the State Water Board and Minot Elks Lodge. He served as a director of Land Oil and was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in New Town.
In 1944, he obtained his pilot's license to control coyote population and reduce sheep losses. Later on, he purchased a larger plane to do commercial flying and also crop-dusting. Francis's flying exploits are talked about to this day. (Local rumors state that he flew under the New Town Bridge on more than one occasion.)
He was very instrumental in the development of the Edgewater Country Club in New Town. He served as grounds keeper for many years and remained an active golfer until age 83.
After his retirement, he spent many an enjoyable hour playing pinochle at the Main Lanes in New Town. Following the endeavors of his 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren gave him great pleasure.
Survivors: wife, Alice, a resident of the New Town Nursing Home; sons: Robert "Bob", Anaheim, CA, Steve "Butch" (Patti), Dickinson, ND; daughters Joanne (Darrel) Quale, New Town, Anne (Glenn) Stout, Las Vegas, NV; Mary Lou Goodall, Williston, ND; brother John, New Town; cousin Larry Goodall who lived with the Goodall family for many years. His parents and a daughter, Jeanne, preceded him in death.
