MARENGO – Leona J. Canning, 86, of Marengo, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at Mercy Harvard Hospital. She was born May 30, 1924, in Rockford, to Clarence and Fern (Hepfer) Winterland. Her mother passed away when she was 1 year old, and she was adopted by her great-aunt and great-uncle, Harry and Nellie Jourden.

She graduated with honors from Oregon High School in 1942 and attended Rockford Business College. She married Glenn Canning on Feb. 23, 1946, in Oak Park.

She was employed by Civil Service in Chicago and later worked in the office at Arnold Engineering Co. for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star and of First Presbyterian Church of Marengo.

She is survived by a stepson, James Canning; a stepdaughter, Patricia (Loren) Kolditz and their families; a cousin, Joan (Lyle) Hayes; her close friend, Gladine Krueger; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1984; her biological and adoptive parents; and a brother, Paul Winterland.

The visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the service at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at Marengo-Union Funeral Home, 505 E. Grant Highway, Marengo. The Rev. Phyllis Mueller will officiate. Interment will be in Lighthouse Cemetery, Oregon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to First Presbyterian Church of Marengo.
