Anthony Joseph Drexel (1826-1893) - Find a Grave Memorial

Businessman. He was a banker noted for the impact on world finances. At the age of 13 he started working in his father’s banking offices. In 1863, after his father’s death he closed the bank branches in Chicago, San Francisco and New York and renamed the firm Drexel Winthrop. He founded a Paris based banking firm with John H. Harjes and Eugene Winthrop in 1867 and with Junius Morgan, he formed the Drexel Morgan Company in 1871. This new merchant banking partnership became a leading role in financing investments in America and Europe. The firm created a national capital market for industrial companies, plus restored investor confidence. It also bailed out the U.S.Government during the Panic of 1895 and rescued the New York Stock Exchange during the Panic of 1907. The company subsequently becomes J.P. Morgan an international banking firm to this date. He died of a heart attack at age 66.
