Mary Elizabeth Freeman was born on Jan. 3, 1843 in Claiborne Co., Tennessee. She was the daughter of Rev. John Thomas Freeman Jr. (1813-1910) and Anna Sharp (1812-1901), the second of their eight known children. Mary's parents are buried in the Freeman Cemetery in Claiborne County, on land that they once owned.

Mary's father, John, born in Greene Co., TN, was a Baptist minister and farmer. He was the son of John Thomas Freeman Sr. (1782-1823) and Mary Polly Watson (1762-1835). Mary's paternal grandparents had migrated with their families from North Carolina to Green Co., TN.

Mary's mother, Anna, was born in Claiborne Co., TN. She was the daughter of William M. Sharp (1765-1840) and Catherine Graves (1770-1840). Both were born in Orange Co., NC and both migrated to eastern Tennessee in the early 1800s. They are buried in the Sharp Cemetery located in Speedwell, Claiborne Co., TN. Their grave sites are currently unknown.

About 1865, Mary married Rev. Sonville Powell Bryant (1843-1915). He was the son of Garret Neal Bryant (1801-1892) and Sarah "Sally" Stanton (1808-aft 1870), both about 22 years of age. They were married about 50 years and had eleven known children.

Sonville died on May 30, 1915 in Claiborne Co., TN at the age of 71. He is buried in the Hooper Cemetery in Cumberland Gap. Claiborne Co., TN.

Mary died on Jan 21, 1917, also in Claiborne Co., TN at the age of 74. She too, is buried in the Hooper Cemetery, near her husband, Sonville.
