The son of Thomas Jefferson & Elizabeth Jane (Shade) Redman, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen at Chestnut Level, Lancaster County, June 28, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 8 as a private with Co. G, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Infantry Battalion, and honorably discharged with his company January 9, 1864. He is in the muster roll as "Redman."
2. Enlisted at the still overstated age of eighteen in Lancaster March 29, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia April 1 as a private with Co. B, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. He honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865, near Alexandria, Virginia, at which time he purchased his Springfield rifle and accoutrements for $6.00. He is in the muster roll as "Reedman."

After the war, he became a railroad conductor and married Martha Virginia McMillen, fathering Elizabeth Virginia (b. 07/??/78 - married Ernest Jordan Taylor), Josephine M. (b. 09/??/80), Jacob T. (b. 07/??/82), Harry W. (b. 01/??/85), Florence R. (b. 04/??/87), and Jessie Gertrude (b. 10/22/89). By 1878 at the latest, he was living with his family in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, and by 1890, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Inscription

Jacob had no headstone for a very long time, but in February of 2023 a new Civil War Veteran's stone, provided by the VA, was installed to mark his burial location.
