Melvin Glenn Sweigart, 90, of Garden Spot Village, New Holland, PA, died on Sunday, June 10, 2012. Born in Narvon, PA he was the son of the late Samuel Good Sweigart and Anna Garman Shirk Sweigart. He was the youngest and only living member of a family of six girls and three boys. He grew up in Morgantown, PA. In 1956 he married Gladys A. Stoltzfus and spent most of his married life near Ronks. At 83 years of age he and his wife moved to Garden Spot Village in New Holland.

Mr. Sweigart graduated from Goshen College and from the University of Delaware. He taught history for four years in Oxford, PA and then for 23 years at Penn Manor Middle School in Marticville. After retiring from teaching, he worked for the Independence Construction Company, retiring at 80 years of age.

Mr. Sweigart was a member of the Forest Hills Mennonite Church, Leola for many years and served at various times as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent and congregational moderator. He was president of the Eby Cemetery for a number of years. Melvin spent 18 months in the United States Medical Corps as a surgical technician.

He enjoyed travel, hiking and the great outdoors. Elderhostels and serving with Mennonite Disaster Service were his delight. He was gifted in mechanical ability, also in woodworking, and was a helping hand to many people.

He is also survived by four children: Philip G. (Karen Landis), North Carolina, Dirk M. of Delaware, Rebecca K. Boyer of Lancaster, Jon M. (Lisa Britton), Philadelphia; and his five much loved grandchildren: Eric, Rachel and Sarah Sweigart, Tristan Sweigart Boyer, and Elizabeth Rae Sweigart.

A viewing is to be held at the Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola, on the evening of Wednesday, June 13, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Memorial Service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Forest Hills Mennonite Church.
