Marion DeForest, 70, died Monday, Oct. 17 at the Medical Center of Vermont in Burlington.

She was born March 31, 1924, in Wilmington. She was the daughter of Elijah and Nettie Bowen Shumway.

She was the Mother Hubbard at Santa's Workshop at Whiteface Mountain. She was the head cook at the Midstation Lodge on Whiteface, founding president of American Legion Auxiliary in Wilmington and was a caller for many square dances with the Stubby Walker Band.

She is survived by her husband, William DeForest of Wilmington; two daughters, Judy Bowen of Wilmington and Victoria Hosley of Wilmington; three sisters, Myrtle Pictoria of Astoria, L.I., Edna Griffin and Nanette Borden, both of Wilmington; two step-daughters, Mrs. Charles Terry of Wilmington and Mrs. Sharron Williams of Fairfield, N.J.; two step-sons, William and Christopher DeForest of Sarasota, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Her first husband, William Alford, died in 1989. She was not married to him at the time of his death.

Her second husband, Warren Terry, died in 1976. One daughter, Edna Sprague, died earlier.

Calling hours were held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Haselton Cemetery in Wilmington. Memorials may be made to the Wilmington Rescue Squad or the Zachay Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Whiteface Mountain Chamber of Commerce in Wilmington.
