Clara Oen, 99, longtime South Prairie area resident, died Wednesday, Sept 17, 1997 in a Rugby hospital.
She was born Jan 13, 1898, at Willow City to Hans and Anne Marie Gaardsmoe. She was raised on the familly farm near Willow City and attended rural schools in the area. She graduated from Minot Model High School, and in 1920 she graduated from Minot Normal School, now Minot State University. She was employed as a teacher by the Harrison Township Consolidated School near Minot in Ward County. She taught at the school in 1921 and 1922 before moving to Missoula Mont., to teach.
She married Gilbert Oen June 15, 1925 in Missoula. They made their home on the Oen family farm in Afton Township in Ward County, southwest of Minot, where they raised small grains, cattle, hogs, turkeys, and chickens. They retired from farming in 1965 and continued to live on the farm. He died Sept. 22, 1967. She lived on the farm until 1987 when she entered the Heart of America Long Term Care Center in Rugby.
She was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church, Minot, and was involved in various women's organizations at the church. She was also a member of the Drady Homemakers Group.
Survivors: sons Martin "Gil" Willow City, Albert Surry, Arthur Auburn Wash., Myron Sitka Alaska; 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.
Funeral: Tuesday at 10 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Minot.
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
