PENTECOST, Dr. Julian Howell Sr., 87, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Mary Holbrook Pentecost, who predeceased him in November 2011. Dr. Pentecost was born in Lawrenceville, Virginia, the son of Aubrey and Belle Nelson Pentecost.
He graduated from the University of Richmond and from Southern Baptist Seminary, and received an honorary degree from the University of Richmond. Dr. Pentecost was an ordained minister and served as pastor at churches in Waynesboro and Richmond, Va. The last years of his professional career, 1970-1992, he served as editor of The Herald, the news magazine for Virginia Baptists. He served as trustee at the University of Richmond for a number of years and was an active member and leader of many community and professional boards and committees.
Dr. Pentecost leaves his beloved children, Julian Howell Pentecost Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Richmond, Va., Anne P. Considine and her husband, Bob, of Rhode Island and Nancy P. Siska and her husband, Brian, of Minnesota. He was the cherished grandfather of Lucas and Sian Siska, Anne and Taylor Wulf, Jason and Stacey Considine and Lee and Beth Considine. He was the proud great-grandfather of Liam, Seamus and Logan Considine. Dr. Pentecost was predeceased by his much loved brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Elizabeth Pentecost of Norfolk, Va.
Dr. Pentecost and his wife enjoyed extensive travels in their lives and devoted their lives to their family and church.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 4 at River Road Church, Baptist. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the organizations that Dr. and Mrs. Pentecost supported, River Road Church, Baptist, 8000 River Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229 or to The Groden Center for Autism, Administrative Office, 610 Manton Ave., Providence, R.I. 02909.
