WILLIAM C. THOMPSON , 87, of Dixon died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at his home. He owned B & A Sporting Goods, was employed by Massey's Ace Hardware and later by Beier and Co. as shipping department supervisor, all in Dixon, retiring in 1990. Mr. Thompson was born June 1, 1917, in Dixon, the son of Dorrance and Olive (Northrup) Thompson. He married Jean E. Thompson on Aug. 8, 1942, at St. Peters Church, Grand Detour. She died Oct. 25, 1997. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Dixon; was involved with scouting, sports programs, boating; Lions Club, Elks, Chamber of Commerce, Dixon Country Club and Heritage Square; and sponsored an award for the Phidian Art Show. He and his wife were recipients of the Life-time Achievement Award presented by the Dixon Chamber of Commerce and Dixon Telegraph at the Citizen of the Year Banquet in 1996. He was a long-time friend of former President Ronald Reagan and visited the president in the Oval Office with his wife, Jean, in 1984. He also was a featured speaker at the president's memorial service this past year in Dixon. He enjoyed traveling and entertaining friends. Survivors include two sons, William (Linda) Thompson of Geneseo and John (Debbie) Thompson of Dixon; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
