Lester H. Fritz, a welder, sportsman and music lover, died on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Fonda Nursing Home, at age 90, having lived in Fonda since 1928.

Lester Henry Fritz was born in Sac County, Iowa, on July 23, 1921, the son of Henry and Maddie Lee (Smith) Fritz. Lester attended Fonda Community School, graduating with the class of 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946, then returned home and married his sweetheart, Edythe C. Cuppy.

Lester learned welding at the family business in Fonda, where he worked for 13 years after WWII. He went on to do welding and maintenance at John Morrell, Hygrade and Hormel meat processing plants for the remainder of his career.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Fonda Riflemen's Club and president of the Fonda Conservation Club. Lester served Fonda as a volunteer fireman for 13 years and as a Boy Scout leader for ten. He loved music; he and Edythe encouraged their boys in piano, band and private lessons and had a subscription to the Fort Dodge Orchestra for many years. Lawrence Welk was a favorite television program. A later hobby, especially in his retirement years, was woodworking; Lester called his pieces "Danish Modern" style and made hundreds of pieces for family members and friends.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edythe; and son Rhett. He is survived by sons: Renard (Karen) of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; and Roark of Plainfield, Illinois; foster daughter, Ann Way of Sioux City, Iowa; five granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren; brothers: Donald, Wesley (Marge) and Norman (Sylvia) of Fonda; sisters: Alice (Art) Williams of Fonda and Marcella Boland of Fort Dodge
