The son of George Frederick and Catherine (Dresler) Stainbrook.
John was one of twelve children: Jacob/bap.1767, George Frederick/Dec.1767, Catherine 1769, (William) Henry/1770, Magdelena/1773, John/1773/4 Adam/1776, Christian/1779, Susannah/1780, Elizabeth/1781, Peter/1784, Margaret/1785.
He served in the War of 1812 in Captain James McKnight's Company of the 137th Regiment of Pennsylvania Militia. In 1814 John was made a sergeant. He received 40 acres of bounty land for his service. In 1855 he received an additional 120 acres of land under Warrant Number 16,804.
He was engaged in agriculture in Fairfield Township his entire life. Married Elizabeth Kightlinger daughter of Abraham and Nancy Kightlinger sometime before 1805. The Kightlingers were also an old Pennsylvania family.
John and Elizabeth were the parents of nine known children: George Frederick/abt.1805,Nancy/1809,Adam/1811,Daniel/1813, Eliza/1815, Jacob/1818,James/1822,Susannah/1826,Maria/1831.
