Henry Hiram Bingham was born in 1836 in Lawrence Co., AL. He was the son of William A. Bingham and Elizabeth Pounder. He married Sarah Jane Walker in Chickasaw Co., MS on 24 Mar 1859. They became the parents of one child, a son, Austin Hiram, born 17 December 1861 in Bellefontaine, Webster Co., MS.
Henry Hiram served as postmaster of Hohenlinden, MS from December 1859 to August 1860.
He enlisted in the CSA in Houston, MS on April 1, 1862. His commanding officer was General Braxton Bragg. On October 29, 1863, he was captured at the Battle of Lookout Mountain where he had been wounded in the right forearm by a rifle ball. He was treated at a field hospital and then moved to a hospital at Tullahoma, TN. On February 6, 1864, he was transferred to the Rock Island Prison in Rock Island, IL, being among the first group of prisoners taken to the garrison from the battlefields. While being held at this prison, Henry Hiram's right arm and leg were amputated, the limbs being severely gangrenous by this time. He died March 19, 1864 of Emphysema, and was buried on the grounds of the prison. He was interred in Grave #870 located south of the barracks. He left his orphaned son, Austin Hiram, who came to live with his grandfather, William Bingham in Webster Co., MS.
Henry Hiram had a brother, Green B. Bingham, who also was in the CSA. Green lost his life in the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN and was buried on the battlefield. A Bingham descendent had a CSA memorial marker for Green placed in the cemetery of the Double Springs Church in Webster Co., MS where the Bingham family worshiped.
