Little is known of ALC's early life except his reported service int he C.S.A. as a military clerk. (H.Q. Clerk, Conscript Service of Georgia February 11-October 1, 1864, Private August 1, 1863.) He'd enlisted with his two brothers William R. and James M. Hurst on the same day according to Newton County, Georgia court roster records. Their names are signed in sequence, and they apparently waited in line together to enlist. After the war ALC and Fannie moved to Opelika, Alabama where two of their children were born, including William Harris Hurst. From there, they moved on to Axtell, Texas where the remainder of their children were born and where they died. ALC and Fannie are buried in a cemetery near Waco, Texas.
