John married Mary Sliter on April 5, 1810 in Syracuse, New York.
In 1840, following in the footsteps of sons Alvah, Walter and Alanson, John and Mary came to Iowa County, Wisconsin, bringing with them their youngest son, John A. The 1850 US census has them in Ridgeway, but by 1852 they had relocated to the then-thriving small community of Dover, where Walter and Alanson both lived. By occupation, John was a farmer.
John passed away in 1862, and is buried in Alanson's private family burial plot, now known as the Dover Culver Cemetery.
John and Mary had ten children: Alvah (buried in Old Helena Cemetery, Iowa Co.) b. 1811; Alanson (whose wife, Abigail, and daughter, Frances, are also buried here) b. 1813; Frances b. 1815; Wilson b. 1820; twins William and Walter b. 1822; Malinda Climena b. 1824; Alphonse b. 1826; Joshua B. (who became a Civil War colonel of repute and the first mayor of Duluth, Minn.) b. 1828; and John Almond b. 1831.
Note that John's parentage is uncertain. While some sources (see DAR members 37354, et alia) make him the son of Joshua (1775-1848), John's date of birth would make that unlikely. Other research suggests John and Joshua are brothers. Neither can be proven definitively.

Gravesite Details
The age on John's stone would put his date of birth at around 1800, an obvious error as he was married in 1810. The cemetery was restored by the Dover Mothers Club in 1949. Whether John's stone is original or dates only to the restoration is unknown.
