Published: 24 Aug 2010 - Crookston times - Crookston, Minnesota: Obituary - Engbert "Bert" DeYoung - Chino, Calif. - Engbert "Bert" DeYoung, 89, of Chino, CA, formerly of Beltrami, MN, died on August 14, 2010 in Chino valley Hospital, Chino. He was born on the home farm in rural Crookston, MN to Louis and Tilda (Schat) DeYoung on August 12, 1921.

Bert attended rural schools near his home. Following his schooling, Bert entered the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper. He served during World War II and was held as a prisoner of war for 11 months. He was discharged and returned to Crookston.

In 1946, Bert married Ida Swenson at the parsonage in Shelly. Bert held several jobs over the next few years, before moving to Louisiana. In 1954, they returned to Beltrami and farmed until 1965, when they moved to Azusa, CA. Ida died in 1969. Bert worked as an auto mechanic for GM until his retirement in 1986. He married Jessie Contares in 1971, at Azusa and she passed away in 1990. Bert was fortunate to meet and later marry Mildred Workman in Chino. They have lived together since 1993.

In his retirement years, Bert volunteered at a local church, the Historical Society, and an area women's club. He was very successful as a vegetable gardner. Bert enjoyed shooting rifles with the gun club and was a member of the NRA. He was famous for "doing things his way." In the last years, Bert was devoted to the well being of his beloved Mildred.

Bert is survived by his wife, Mildred Workman, Chino, CA; two sons: Wayne and his wife, Delores "Dee", Shelly, MN and Robert, Upland, CA; one step-daughter, Corrine and her husband, Chris Workman, Ontario, CA; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; one sister, Sady Skalet, Beltrami, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wives, Ida, Jessie, one grandson, Curtis Workman, one great-grandson, Joseph Lujon, and sister, Kathryn Blokzyl.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 23, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly, MN. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 22, 2010, from 5-7 pm in the Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN. Burial will be in the Shelly Marsh River Cemetery.
