James was the son of James Hemphill, Sr. of Rowan County and the brother of Capt. Thomas Hemphill of Old Fort. His wife was Elizabeth Patton, daughter of Robert and Charity Moore Patton. He had at least four children, Thomas T., James, William, and Jean. He was killed in a skirmish with the British at Cowan's Ford* (Historical marker on Hwy. 64, near the intersection with Hwy. 226 in what is now McDowell County) just prior to the Battle of King's Mountain where his brother, Thomas, served. I do not have his children listed because I do not know where their bodies lie. He was my 4x-great grandfather. For more information on this skirmish, please refer to Vol. 7 of the History of the Toe River Valley by Dr. Lloyd Bailey. *There were two separate battle locations named Cowan's Ford.
