Ward William French, 87, Kenmare, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at a Stanley nursing home.

He was born August 3, 1915, at Coulee, ND, the son of Oren Herbert and Elena (Mahlum) French. As a youth Ward was interested in boxing and horses.

In the late 1930's, Ward worked in the copper mines in Butte, MT. He was once married to Katie McAllister. In 1942, he joined the United States Army. He served in the paratroop division until an injury forced him into the medical corp. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1945. After his discharge he lived with his wife Katie on the farm where he was raised. The couple had two sons, Jay and Rex.

Ward worked as an orderly at the Minot Veterans Hospital and he later transferred to Ft. Harrison Veterans Hospital in Montana. He worked as a mail carrier in Helena, MT, for a number of years. He married Marion Johnson of Kenmare in 1981. The couple wintered in CA, for several years where he worked as a masseur. Marion died in 1993. Ward returned to Kenmare and later entered Mountrail County Bethel Home in Stanley where he lived until his death.

Survivors: sons, Jay F. French, Missoula, MT and Rex (Wanda) French, Helena, MT; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice Swartz, Port Ludlow, WA, Erma (Alan) Fuller, Mentor, MN and Phyllis (Oren) Hanson, Palermo, ND; brother, Hiro (Evelyn) French, Howard, SD; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two brothers, Elton and Whitman French.

Funeral Service: Saturday, June 14, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service.

Burial: Rosehill Cemetery, Kenmare, ND.
