William was the 11th of 12 children born in Olme, Varmland, Sweden to Maria Nilsdotter Nelson and Per Westberg Anderson. William's mother died when he was 3.
In 1889 William traveled with his youngest brother to Chicago where he lived with his sister, Christina, and her family as well as his father and step-mother.
William was a musician who initially made his living as a piano maker. He was active in Bethel Lutheran Church where he played the organ and directed the choir. In his early 30s, he married Elizabeth Broman who was the older sister of his brother, Fred's wife, Maria. Two years later, in 1907, Elizabeth gave birth to their daughter, Wilma. Elizabeth died one week later, probably because of a problem related to childbirth.
William and his infant daughter moved into the home of Clara his widowed mother-in-law. Clara's youngest sister Svea already lived there. A couple of years later, after the early death of William' brother, Fred in 1909, the household expanded to include Fred's widow (Clara's daughter), Maria and her 2 small daughters. This same family group was still living together in 1930, so the 3 little cousins were raised together.
Over the years Fred continued to be active in music, building organs and tuning pianos. In his later years he also worked as a carpenter.
