John was 1 of 11 children born to James Washington Oakes & his wife, Evaline (Oakes); they were 1st cousins.

John married his 1st wife, Susan Carter (Giles), on Oct 16, 1866 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Their only child was Rebecca Caroline Oakes, born in 1868 VA.

John married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Sallie (Fuller), on Febr 25, 1875 in Pittsylvania Co.
Their 3 children:
(daughter) Levener E. & (son) Ray Lee *twins born 1877 VA
(daughter) Marie K., b. 1879 VA

During the Civil War John served in Co B, 38th VA Infantry Regiment (CSA), along with his brothers, James Lafayette & Thomas Clement Oakes. He & older brother, Thomas Clements, enlisted together on April 4, 1861, at Callands, VA.
