Visitation will be held at Rockett Funeral Home in Ringgold on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
Mr. Wilson passed away at the Ringgold Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on November 7, 2012 after a lengthy illness. He was born on February 16, 1919 in Red River Parish, LA near East Point. After graduating from East Point High School, he entered the Army Air Corps during WWII as a gunner in the Panama Canal Zone. Upon completing his service he married Aline Cobb and became an entrepreneur, cattle rancher and tree farmer. He received numerous awards from the Louisiana Forage Council including Outstanding Forage Farmer of the Year and Outstanding Large Beef Producer. He was a member of the Louisiana Cattleman's Association SPUR club and the Louisiana Forestry Association. He was one of the first tree farmers in the area to emphasize conservation and stewardship. He set aside a portion of his land to be preserved as a wetlands area forever. Because of his innovation and pursuit of excellence in modern agriculture, Mr. Wilson was the subject of two feature articles in "Progressive Farmer," a national publication.
His forbears were founders of Springhill Baptist Church in Ringgold where he became a lifelong member at an early age. Mr. Ralph was instrumental in founding the Springhill Cemetery Committee where he served as president for many years.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Aline Cobb Wilson along with his parents and siblings.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Mary Louise Long and her husband Durwin of Ringgold, LA, Kathy Johnson and her husband Harold of Minden, LA, and Tami Boyd and her husband Dr. Harry Boyd Jr. of Winnsboro, LA; grandchildren, Leslie Ray and her husband Bryan, Heather McFarlain and her husband Lee, Jennifer Pennington, Jason Johnson, and Sara Boyd; great grandchildren, Lyndey Clayborn, Lauren Clayborn, Tyler Ray, Peyton McFarlain, Paige McFarlain, Gabriel Pennington, Noah Pennington, Austin Johnson and Haylee Johnson; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Bill Wilson, James Wilson, Roger Wilson, Larry Shaw, Bill Conly, Jr. and Judge Lewis Sams.
Mr. Wilson's friends and family would describe him as one of the most unforgettable characters they ever met. He never met a stranger and he was a strong man with a big personality.
The family would extend their gratitude to the staff at Ringgold Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Advantage Home Health; and his three special caregivers, Bertha Bradley, Diane Mosley and Becky Singletary for their loving care and dedication.
