Afghan War British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the Corps Royal Engineers, British Army. At the Bazar Valley, Afghanistan, on January 31, 1879, his corps came under an enemy attack in a river-bed. Exposed to the fire of the enemy from both flanks, Lieutenant Hart took the initiative in running some 1,200 yards to the rescue a wounded Sowar of his unit. Reaching the wounded Sowar, he drove off the enemy, brought him under cover and returned to his lines. For gallant conduct in risking his own life, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle in December 1879. Remaining in the service, he was later Commander in Chief of the forces in Guernsey and Alderney, retiring as General Sir Reginald Hart in 1914.
