Robert was born in Liberty which was a small village on Great Island in the Susquehanna River just east of present-day Dunnstown. Prior to 1839 this area was in Lycoming County.

Robert was the thirteenth and last child of James and Margaret (Davis) Curns. He served in Company C, Pennsylvania 52nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He was mustered into service on 17 Oct 1861, was promoted to Corporal on 1 Dec 1863 and was mustered out on 5 Nov 1864 (3 Year Term). He served in the same unit as his brother George C. Curns. His brothers William M. Curns and Daniel R. Curns also served.

Following the war Robert married Cordelia Gemberling, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Moyer) Gemberling on 15 Oct 1865. Robert and Cordelia had one child, Anna Belle, in 1866. After Cordelia's death, Robert married Eliza Ellen "Ella" Gunsallus, daughter of Richard and Eve (Letterman) Gunsallus, on 10 April 1879. Robert and Ella had five children: Cora Maude, twins May Olive (Ollie) and Sadie Ida, Bessie Pearl and George Barton Curns.

In 1897 Robert became very ill and Bessie and George were enrolled in the Soldiers' Orphans School in Uniontown, Fayette, Pennsylvania. May Olive Curns was 16 and started working at Pennsylvania Memorial Home for soldiers and widows in Brookville, Jefferson PA.
