Louis was born to Joseph Gauthier & Meline Marchand. Louis enlisted as a Private in the Union Army at Galena, Illinois on August 4, 1862 for a bonus of $25 (National Archives, 1989). He was mustered as a Private named "Gotica" into Company A, 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Camp Fuller, Rockford, Illinois on September 6, 1862. The regiment was recruited largely from Jo Daviess County, six of its companies, A, E, F, H, J and K, being composed entirely of Jo Daviess men, while companies B, C, D and G were from Lake County (History, 96th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1900). March 1 to April 23, 1864, the Regiment camped at Cleveland, Tennessee to fortify and garrison that place. Louis was hospitalized three times for illness during his service and died on April 14, 1864 from disease in a Union Army Hospital while the 96th Illinois Infantry Regiment was encamped at Cleveland, Tennessee (National Archives, 1989). Louis was one of 190 soldiers who died of disease during the war of the Regiments total 768 casualties (History, 96th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1900). He was buried in the military cemetery near Cleveland, TN but may have been relocated to Chatanooga National Cemetery. Would like to find records indicating his burial place if possible.
