Emma Margaret Morris was born in late August 1860 in the state of Louisiana. The exact locality of her birth is mentioned in her obituary as Lake Charles, however there are no records of her birth there, nor of there being a Morris family with names that match those listed on her marriage record. Nothing is known of her life prior to her arrival to New Orleans in 1885. However, genetic information carried by her descendants indicate she was a close relative of French families by the name Meaux, Simon, Broussard, and Thibodeaux. These families lived in St Martin and Iberville Parish in central Louisiana. It's possible that she may have actually been born there.

The earliest confirmed record of Emma is her marriage to George Henry Messmer Jr on April 9th, 1888 in New Orleans. George was the son of a Swiss immigrant from St Gallen, Switzerland. There is considerable information present on her marriage records. It notates that Emma was a widow when she married George, she was originally married to a man named "W. M. Wagner", whom presumably died. Emma was recorded as being 28 years old and George 27 by the time of their marriage.

The marriage records also note the name of Emma's parents as "Moses D Morris" and "Frances S Simon" as far as can be determined from the handwriting.

Emma and George Messmer had six known children:

Elizabeth Frances Messmer (1889-1972)
George Morris Messmer (1891-1961)
Carl August Messmer (1893-1976)
Vida Emanuella Messmer (1895-1955)
Emma Annette Messmer (1897-1974)
Ita Aline Messmer (1900-1988)

Emma and George Messmer appear together in the 1900 US Census in New Orleans with their children on 2050 Poydras St.

Emma later appears on the 1910 US Census as living on 1905 Gravier St in New Orleans with her children as the head of household, working as a portress (doorkeeper/housekeeper) at a school. Her husband George is not living with the family. George is listed as living on Josephine St with Maurice Cazaubon and his family. So they were presumably separated - though not divorced and Emma was raising the children in her home. There was some friction in the family as one of her daughters would tell their own children that their grandma Emma "had moved back to Welles, France", though this was untrue.

On both Census documents the worker writes Emma's father as being from Germany and her mother from France, however census takers often got this wrong.

Emma died at 11:41pm on October 12th, 1912. The death record has very poor handwriting but is linked to some trauma from a "nail in the foot". A brief obituary noted on this profile mentions her being a "native of Lake Charles". She was 52 years old at the time of her death.

Bio written by Jerry Johnston, 2nd great grandson through her daughter Vida Emmanuella Messmer.
