Born in England, but lived in New York since early childhood with an American guardian, George Johnson, after his parents died.
Ran away from his family to join Co. I 117th. New York Infantry in the Civil War, at New York City on the 1st. March 1865.
Transfered to Co. G 48th. New York Infantry, and was discharged for disability on the 17th. July 1865, at McDougall General Hospital, New York City.
Then became indentured as a midshipman on the 'Sir William Wallace' for three voyages in 1867.
Spent the later years of his life based in Australia as a sea captain voyaging to New Guinea, Fiji and the Pacific rim.
Died aged 56 years, of bronchitis and senile decay, of four months duration.
Surviving was his wife Mary Anne and daughter Katherine Harriet, aged 18, both living in New Zealand.
Buried in the Church of England section of Rookwood Cemetery on the 26th. April 1904.
The grave is unmarked.
