HILEMAN, Bernice Gregg passed away on July 28, 2006. Preceded in death by her husband Russell E. Hileman in February 1972, their son Gregg R. Hileman, June 1, 2003, and Bernice's first husband, John F. Wood, Sr. in 1960, and her parents, Jesse F. Gregg, Sr. 1972, and Henrietta Gregg 1992. Born Bernice Mabel Gregg on January 15, 1915, to Jesse Franklin Gregg and Cora Elizabeth Delay in a tent in Texas City, Texas. Cora and Jesse had 5 children, Jesse Franklin, Jr.; Eula Elizabeth; Francis Leona; Bernice Mabel and Bertha Flora. They all traveled the world with their father who was an army officer. A few years after Cora's passing in the Philippines, Jesse married a brave woman, Henrietta Louise Beckelman. They had one child, Howard Christy Gregg, now there were six. Siblings preceding Bernice in death, Jesse Franklin Gregg, Jr.; Howard Christy Gregg; Eula Elizabeth Gregg-Howell; Francis Leona Gregg-Black. Bernice married John Farnsworth Wood, Sr. in January 1933. They had two children, John F. Wood, Jr., and Carol J. Wood. Bernice worked as a bookkeeper for United States Government in Panama Canal Zone for 20 years. During her 20 years of employment she was the sole support of her two children for 10 years. She was one of the first working single Moms, she did a very good job, managed to save money and buy a car for cash when Carol was 7 years old. Bernice met Russell E. Hileman on the job in Panama Canal Zone where he worked as the housing manager. They were married on August 2, 1952. Russell had one daughter at the time, Patricia Ann Hileman- Stoskey. Bernice and Russ retired from Federal employment in Panama and moved to Burbank, California in 1953, where they purchased their first Foster Freeze. Russ adopted Carol Jay. Bernice and Russ had one son, Gregg R. Hileman on September 18, 1955. They sold that Burbank Foster Freeze in late 1955, and purchased the Foster Freeze and Charlene's (store #138) on Sierra Highway in Palmdale, California. Bernice was a long time member of the Palmdale Eastern Star and a member of the Palmdale Women of the Moose. Bernice and Russ were long time residence of Palmdale. They worked side by side in the Palmdale Foster Freeze and Charlene's restaurant until his death in February 1972. Bernice being a very independent woman continued running the business until 1986, when she went into retirement. In 1996, due to blindness from Macular Degeneration, Bernice sold her home in Palmdale and moved in with her daughter Carol J. Gideon. On November 8, 1997, Bernice and Carol moved to Phoenix, Ariz. Bernice returned to Lancaster, California in June 2003, to live with her granddaughter Chris Lemenager and family. She wanted to be closer to her family that lived in California. Bernice Mabel Gregg-Hileman is survived by her son, John F. Wood, Jr., daughters Carol J. Gideon, Patricia A. Stoskey, grandchildren; Steven Wood, Tina Louise Windsor- Bates, John F. Wood III, Thomas Wayne Windsor-Gideon, Keith Wood, Chris L. Gideon-Lemenager, Robyn L. Snavely, Eric A. Lohr, Scott R. Lohr and Christopher G. Hileman and all their spouses, 26 great- grandchildren, her sister Bertha Flora Gregg-Cain of Waco, Texas and sister-in-law Mary Anderson Gregg. God bless and keep her safe and happy on her journey to be with her loved ones. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, August 4, 2006, at Chapel of the Valley Mortuary in Palmdale.
