Mrs. Lilla Ard Cox, wife of Mellon Vance Cox, a prominent citizen of Hemingway, died Friday night at her home following a prolonged illness.

Funeral services took place at 3 p. m. Sunday from the Old Johnsonville Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Julius Clarl, a former pastor, the Rev. Charles Moore, pastor of the Hemingway Methodist Church and the Rev. Paul Holland, pastor of the Hemingway Southern Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, followed in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, David Cox, Reed C. Tanner,Jr., Robert F. Tanner, Vance Nesmith, W. T. Nesmith, Jr., C. D. Huggins, Jr., Harry Vance Huggins and Thomas B. Huggins.

Mrs. Cox was the daughter of the late William James and Trizvan Owen Cockfield Ard of the Ard's Crossroads in the Old Johnsonville community. She was born December 19, 1879. She was a lifelong member of the Old Johnsonville Methodist Church and active in all phases of community life.

Surviving, besides her husband, are six daughters, Mrs. Charlie (Rena) Huggins. Mrs. Hill (Iva) Northington, Mrs. Reed C. (Corrine) Tanner of Kingstree, Mrs Willard (Pearl) Nesmith of Nesmith, Miss Miriam Cox and Mrs. Peggy Wimberly of Hemingway; two sons, A Articus Cox, Sr. and Richard Lofton Cox of Hemingway. 23 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
