Catherine, my maternal 2nd great grandmother, was a daughter of Jonas Swezea and Elizabeth Lovelady Swezea who married in 1844 (probably in Jackson Co., TN). Shortly after their marriage, they moved to MO, settling in Ellsinore, Carter Co., MO.

After Jonas' death during the Civil War, Elizabeth married A. G. Gresham of the same county.

Catherine married John C. Smith and had several children, including Sarah Elizabeth Smith Link (my maternal great-grandmother).

Her obituary was published in the 12-18-1930 edition of The Current Local, Van Buren, MO on the front page.

"Mrs. Catherine J. Smith, aged 82, died here Sunday at the A. M. Link home, following a long illness. The funeral was preached by Rev. H. H. Stratton at the Baptist church, Tuesday, and interment took place at the Gresham cemetery. The Greer Undertaking company of Poplar Bluff was in charge.

Mrs. Smith was one of the oldest citizens of Carter County. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. A. M. Link of Ellsinore; Mrs. Ida Burns of St. Louis; Mrs. Clema Burris of Little Rock, and Mrs. Nora Morris of Poplar Bluff. All except Mrs. Burris were here for the funeral. She also leaves one brother, Rev. Allen Sweazea of Chilton."
