Bert I. BANTA, for many years a dealer in farm implements and hardware in Leonidas, died at 6:00 a.m. Saturday in the Sturgis hospital. He was 73 years old.

Mr. BANTA had been in failing health for four years; worked for the St. Joseph County road commission until the latter part of 1956. He lived alone.

He was born April 8, 1884 in Colon, son of Henry and Clara (BULLOCK) BANTA. On May 24, 1905, he married the late Beatrice B. CONN, who preceded him in death on January 29, 1956.

He belonged to the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Farm Bureau and the Grange.

At the time he went into the hardware and farm implement business some 45 years ago, he also became a traveling butcher, well known throughout this vicinity, killing, dressing out and cutting up beef and port for farmers. Mrs. BANTA operated a drug store in Leonidas for many years.

Mr. BANTA left the implement business about 1940 to become sexton for the three cemeteries in the Leonidas vicinity for about five years, then went to work for the county road commission.

Mr. BANTA is survived by a sister, Mrs. Jake (Edith) BAAD of Union City, and a brother, Harry BANTA of Centreville.

Funeral services were held at the Leonidas Community Church on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, with burial in Lakeside Cemetery near Colon.
