Carl Greenfield, son of Dick and Reba (Nordmann) Greenfield, was born July 20, 1918 at Woden, Iowa. As a young child he moved with his family to the Castlewood area. Carl grew up and received his education in rural school near Castlewood. He worked on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army in 1941 where he served during WWII. He was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge and the Invasion of Normandy. He received the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts during his military career. After his discharge he was united in marriage to Phyllis Thelin in Castlewood on March 24, 1946. He managed Kone's Corner from 1947 to 1959 and then served as a rural mail carrier until his retirement. Carl also sold cemetery monuments for Watertown Monument Works for many years. After Phyllis' death on November 8, 2003 he continued to live in Castlewood until entering the Golden Living Center in Lake Norden in 2008. Carl died there on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the age of 93 years.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he held many offices through the years. Carl was also a life member of the American Legion, was named Legionnaire of the Year, was Post Commander, Post Adjutant, and Athletic Officer for many years. He received the KELOLAND Jefferson Award for his community involvement. He was active and served on the boards of the Castlewood Cemetery, Assisted Living, worked with the Boy Scouts and was an EMT with the Castlewood Ambulance.

Carl enjoyed walking his dog and attending his children's and grandchildren's activities and sporting events.

Grateful for having shared his life are two sons, Don Greenfield and his wife Lana of Doland, SD, Bob Greenfield and his wife Rose of Foxfield, CO; five grandchildren, Brock Greenfield of Clark, SD, Blake (Amber) Greenfield, Laci (Kevin) Sosa, all of Rapid City, SD, Erica and Leah Greenfield of Foxfield, CO; one great granddaughter, Brielle; one brother, Bill (June) Greenfield of Tucumcari, NM; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; one daughter JoAnn; one son Gary; his parents; five brothers, Herman, Pete, Ted, Ollie and Robert; three sisters, Jo Hoftiezer, Stella Woertink and Ester in infancy.

His funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 26, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church in Castlewood. Visitation will be from 5PM to 8PM Wednesday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Castlewood.
