Mary was the daughter of Peter and Mary Ann [Reed] Shraw, part of a German immigrant community in Pike County, Ohio. She was just 17 when she married neighbor John Emel; they had seven children while living in Ohio. They came to Illinois in the 1870s. She was only 34 when she died; her husband re-married two years later.
