Rev. Sherman Dies of Heart Attack
The Rev. John P. Sherman, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church for the last 17 years, died suddently of a heart attack at his home at 1:45 this afternoon. He was 72 years old.
Father Sherman had nob been ill. He attended the concert by the Pasquier trio at the College of Saint Teresa last night and spent the morning today going about his routine duties. Early in the afernoon he became ill and died shortly thereafter.
A resident of Winona since 1913, Father Sherman ahd been active in church and civic affairs and it was under his direction that the new St. Mary's church was constructed on West Broadway. He said the first mass in the new edifice February 3, 1940. A new rectory, another of his fondest dreams, is currently under construction at the rear end of the church.
Father Sherman was pastor of St. Thomas Pro-Cathedral from 1913 until 1925. In 1925 he was granted a leave of absence until 1934 when he became pastor of St. Mary's parish. Prior to serving in Winona, he was pastor at Wykoff, Windom and Worthington, all in the Winona diocese.
He was ordained at St. Paul's siminary at St. Paul June 12, 1903, and from September until December of that year he was in Wykoff. He then spent a year at Windom, then went to Worthington wehre he served until 1913 when he was assigned to St. Thomas parish here.
he was appointed deputy of Temporalities at Immaculate Heart of Mary seminry here last June.
Father Sherman was the son of John and Mary Sherman and was born in Eyota May 29, 1878. Survivors are a brother Fred J. Sherman, Sr., of Winona and one sister, Miss Edith M. Sherman, also of this city. The body is at the Burke funeral parlors.
