Austrian Stage and Film Director. He started directing for the stage at the age of 16 in Darmstadt, Germany, soon moved to Berlin, and directed his first film in Germany in 1934. He later ran afoul of the Nazi regime, with another 1934 film--Ein Kind, ein Hund, ein Vagabund--being banned and then re-released only in a censored version. He managed to survive the war by working only on "safe" entertainment-oriented projects after this, and he continued to direct until 1978. He also wrote and lectured in Europe. In 1988 he donated his extensive collection of historic documents to the University in Bayreuth, Germany.
