His daughter witnessed this terrible accident which happened after he had put her and her children on the train to return to Iowa. She tried to get off the train after it had started moving. He was buried in San Lucas beside his grandson, William Abraham Wheeler who died in 1894.

The Monterey Great Register of Voters for 1896 lists him as a resident of San Lucas (this was May, 1896), just before he was killed..The registration record includes a personal description. Abraham W. Lehew was a farmer, age 65, 5' 10" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, gray hair, with a scar at the corner of his right eye."
