Chesley was Tandy and Catherine's fifth child. He was born September 2, 1831. He was ten years old when they moved to Iowa. March 12, 1854 Chesley married Rizpah Lucore. They were the parents of eight children, six boys and two girls. Chesley enlisted in Co. F, 13 Regiment of the Iowa Infantry September 17, 1861 and left for duty October 15, 1861. April 6, 1862 he was wounded in the arm in the battle of Shilo and promoted to 4th corporal March 9, 1863. On January 1, 1864 he re-enlisted in Vicksburg, Mississippi as a veteran volunteer. At some time during his enlisment, Chesley was hospitalized for sun stroke. On July 22, 1864 he was taken prisoner near Atlanta, Georga, and put in the Andersonville War Prison. About six months later he was included in the prisoner exchange in either Savannah or Charleston. Upon Chesley's release he was hospitalized in Annnapolis, Maryland, and returned to duty July 26, 1865. He was discharged July 29, 1865. He never fully recovered from the effects of the hardship
and exposures of army life and he became a living skeleton. Chesley tried for years to get a pension, and finally received it, just a short time before he died.
Chesley was five foot nine inches tall with blue eyes, dar hair, and a light complexion. Many of the years after Chesley came home were spent in sickness. Rizpah was a victim of dropsy, and Chesley suffered from the effects of the sun stroke he had recieved during the war. Shortly before Chesley died, their youngest son, Claude, died. I don't know how old Chaude was, but I think he was very young. Chesley L. Brockman died at his home in the town of Western College in Linn County,Iowa, January 10, 1884, at the age of 52 years, 2 months and 9 days, and is buried
in Western College Cemetery. Rizpah died in April of 1893 and is buried in Marion, Iowa at the Oakshade Cemetery.
