Harold was the first child of Emery and Clara Hackler Young. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and grew up during the Great Depression. He joined the U.S. Navy on November 24, 1942 and began active duty on January 18, 1943 and served in both the Pacific and Atlantic. On September 9, 1944, he married Alice. They had three daughters Marsha, Brenda and April. He and Alice had 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
