MEMBER OF THE IRON BRIGADE
Frederick Alves, formerly a resident of the town of Chilton and a veteran of the civil war, passed quietly away at his home in Forest Junction Monday morning, April 22, 1907. The deceased was born May 11, 1831, in Hanover, Germany, and came to this country with his parents in 1846. The family settled in the town of Sheboygan Falls, which was then a dense forest, Sheboygan at that time was but a village of fishermen, numbering, perhaps, more wigwams than shanties or houses of white men.
He was married in 1858 to Bertha Shermer, with whom he lived in a happy wedlock for nearly half a century. During the dark days of the civil war he answered the call and with thousands of brave men rallied around the old flag. He served in Co. H of the 6th Wis Vol Infantry, under its gallant leader, Gen. E. S. Bragg.
In 1877 he came with his family to the town of Chilton, about 2 ½ miles west of this city. During his residence here he was esteemed as a good citizen and an obliging neighbor. In 1895 he sold his farm to his son, Herman, and moved with his wife to Forest Junction where he resided since that time. In 1883 he became one of the charter members of the Ebenezer Reformed church of this city and served as one of her first elders. He took an active part in the building of the church until he moved to Forest Junction, when he was greatly missed by pastor and people. He was deeply interested in church music and before the congregation had an organ it relied entirely upon him in starting and leading the singing. For many years he has been a sufferer from rheumatism, causing him at times severe pain and rendering him at last, more or less, an invalid. However, he was active about the yard until a week or two ago, when he contracted a cold, causing his final sickness. Patiently he bore his cross until God exchanged it for a crown. He delighted in the word of God and meditated on it day and night.
The casket containing the body, accompanied by relatives, arrived at St. Paul depot Wednesday morning, from where it was taken directly to the Ebenezer church. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wm. A. Arpke, who delivered an impressive discourse and gave testimony to the sterling Christian character of the deceased. Interment in Breed's cemetery.
A devoted companion, two sons, Herman and Gustave, one daughter, Mrs. Selma Wichman, one brother, Louis of Plymouth, two sisters in Sheboygan County, Mrs. Wegner, of town Herman and Mrs. Brueckner of town Sheboygan Falls and four grandchildren survive him.
Federal pension card = Frederick Alves. Applied for veterans pension 6-9-1892 in Wisconsin. Widow Bertha applied for pension 5-23-1907 in Wisconsin. These 2 files will have detailed inf.. His file may give town in Hanover province born in. Her file will have proof of marriage & her full date & place of death.
