Colvin joined Battery M, 1st IL Light Artillery as a Junior First Lieutenant on 12 Aug 1862. He mustered out of the Battery on 10 Oct 1863 to take promotion to Captain and command of Colvin's Independent Battery. This unit was transferred into the 1st IL Light Artillery as New Battery K on 23 Mar 1865 with Colvin maintaining command. Colvin received his discharge from service on 11 Jun 1865.
