Birth: May 4, 1844
Vermont, USA
Death: Nov. 3, 1899
Fredonia

Kansas, USA

Charles was the son of Charles M. Scates and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Cowdon of Vermont. He was born on the border of Canada and Vermont and always referred to himself as 'Canadian'. He also listed himself as born 'Canada' on at least one census. We have found no evidence, however, that he was naturalized. His family is enumerated in Vermont on a numbers of census' and he is with them in early infancy there. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was mustered out of service at Fort Levenworth, Kansas at the close of the war. He remained in Kansas and married there for the first time to the widow, Alice Elizabeth James, who was 11 years his senior, and who has a cyber grave site here as well, on 9 Sep 1867 at Kansas Township, Jefferson Co, Kansas. She owned a large farm in Jefferson County and had three surviving children from her first marriage: Charles, Emma and Flora. The union of Charles Scates and Allie James, as she was known, produced two children: Luther Bertcell Scates and Alice Elizabeth 'Allie' Scates. Charles died sometime before 1905 probably in Wilson county, Kansas near Fredonia, where he and his wife were living at the time. We believe he is buried at Fredonia. His surviving widow moved out to California after his death where she remained with their son, Luther Bertcell Scates, until her death, and was buried at Lancaster Cemetery in Kern Co, CA.
