Fredric Joseph Hirsch, age 71, of Pierce City, MO, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 after suffering complications from pneumonia at Cox South Hospital-Springfield.

Fred was born on September 6, 1938 in rural Wentworth to Wright and Dora Elbert Hirsch.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Carol Sue ridpath Hirsch; one son: James Godfrey Hirsch and wife, Paula; two daughters: Lesa Van Pelt and Carolee Gibson and husband, John; two granddaughters: Holly and Abby Van Pelt; two grandsons: Aaron Hirsch and Mitchell Gibson, all of the Pierce City area. Two brothers: Jerry Hirsch and wife, Joyce, of Pierce City; and Jon Hirsch and wife, Janet, of Springfield; three sisters: Jeanie Harmon and husband, Dennis, of Aurora, MO; Margaret Miller and husband, Richard, of Kansas City, Kansas, and Joyce Mulkey of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; three sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Carver, Charla and Jim Wilks and Bobbie Bean, all of the Kansas City area and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and a devoted cat, BC.

He retired from Wells Aluminum after more than 20 years of service. He also served aboard the USS Essex Aircraft Carrier while in the United States Navy. He was a member of the National American Legion and a life-long resident of Pierce City. Fred was a well-known master gardener and always shared his harvest with friends and neighbors.

Services will be held at the Wessell Funeral Home in Pierce City on Friday, August 6, 2010. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. with services to follow at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post #4207.

Memorials may be made to the Dacy Foundation in care of the funeral home.
