Initially enlisted in the 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant, and made the regiment's quartermaster. His skills at managing and secure supplies for his men were noticed by superiors, and he was transferred to the Union Army Commissary of Subsistence Department, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
