Dr. Martin Winston Clark II
Marshall News Messenger
Sunday, April 1, 2012

MARSHALL Loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, wonderful brother and friend to many, Dr. Martin Winston Clark II, "Martin" to all who knew him, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, March 29, 2012. He was at home resting with his beloved wife, Stella, after a great day of fishing with a friend.

Martin was born in Marshall on October 15, 1943, the second child and only son of Martin Winston and Evelyn Soward Clark. He attended Marshall public schools and graduated from Marshall High School in 1962. He completed his pre-dental studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He continued his education by earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston in 1969, where he met and married Stella Ann Marsh. Martin was a member of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Dental Corps of the United States Navy. He received a Rotary Internship in the Navy and was stationed at Portsmouth, Va. naval hospital and later at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Following the completion of his three-year naval assignment, he and Stella returned to Marshall and opened his dental office where he continued to work until his death.

Martin was an active member of the community. He served on the board of Marshall Regional Hospital while residing as the staff dentist. He also was a board member of the Marshall Regional Hospital Foundation. He was active in the East Texas Dental Society, serving in many capacities, including President. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Dental Association, where he received a 40-year achievement award. He was also a member of the American Dental Association. Martin was a 35-year member of Cypress Valley Bible Church, where he served for many years as an Elder and Sunday school teacher. His devotion to the Lord and to his church was never questioned by anyone who knew him. He loved to study the Bible and to tell others about his faith. He was never shy about witnessing the truth of the Gospel to anyone who would listen. He was faithful to the end.

Martin was an avid fisherman and hunter. He began fishing with his dad, Winston, and his Uncle Quinn when he was barely able to hold a pole in his hands. He was nine when his mother, Evelyn, finally let him learn to shoot a rifle. Duck hunting became a passion as soon as he downed his first mallard in a blind on Caddo Lake. Many memorable evenings were spent with friends sharing a bowl of his famous duck and rice stew and planning the next fishing or hunting trip. He passed on his love for these sports to his son, grandsons and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Winston and Evelyn Clark; and his beloved dog, Frannie.

Martin is survived by his wife of 43 years, Stella Clark; daughter, Paige Heather McCormick and husband, Phil, of Houston, Texas; son, Marsh Winston Clark and wife, Ann, of Richardson, Texas; five grandchildren, well loved by their Papa, Drake Winston and Addison Marie Clark; and Clark Adelaide, Winston Scott and Daxton "Dax" Philip McCormick. He is also survived by his sisters, Luanne Neely and husband, Horace, and Linda McCombs and husband, Neal; nieces and nephews, Cindi Swinney and husband, Steve, Richard Fugler and wife, Melanie, Del Fugler, Brooke Parlin and husband, Scott, and Jay McCombs and wife, Valerie; an aunt, Juanell Tullos; numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and his dog, Sadie.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today, April 1, 2012, at Cypress Valley Bible Church, Student Life Building. The funeral service will be conducted by Martin's pastor and good friend, Bob Bryant, at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012, at Cypress Valley Bible Church.
