Birth/death dates taken from Mary's gravestone. Place of birth from the COOPER family history found in "Rockaway Records of Morris County, New Jersey Families" by J. Percy Crayon, published 1902.

Daughter of DAVID COOPER and ANNA SABINA AYERS, progenitors of the pioneer Rockaway, New Jersey, COOPER family (see COOPER for their information).

Wife of JAMES SCOTT, married January 2, 1872, at Murphys Camp, Calaveras County, California by the Rev. John Mole (recorded in Book C, Page 114, Calaveras County).

Sister of SILAS EDWIN COOPER, progenitor of the Dayton, Nevada, COOPER family (see COOPER for his information).

Sister of DAVID AYERS COOPER, California pioneer settler at Sutter Creek, Amador County, California (see COOPER for his information)

Sister of LYDIA MARIA COOPER, wife of the Hon. HORACE F. BARTINE, two term Senator for the State of Nevada (see BARTINE for her information).

Sister of WILLIAM BEACH COOPER, pioneer settler of Nevada (see COOPER for his information).

Aunt of GERTRUDE CANFIELD COOPER, daughter of JEREMIAH D. COOPER and progenitor of the Dayton, Nevada, RUBY family (see RUBY for her information).

Mother of five children, listed and summarized in James's information.

Mary traveled west to Dayton, Lyon County, Nevada, ca. 1870-1871 by way of the Isthmus of Panama (obituary). The exact date of her arrival is unknown -- I could not find her in either New Jersey or Nevada in the the 1870 U.S. Census. Moved to Murphys Camp, Calaveras County, California, prior to her marriage to James in 1872, and remained there with him for a little over a year until they returned to Dayton (Thomas Wren's 1904 biography of James Scott). I believe their first child, John Edwin, was born at Murphys.

Continued to operate the Dayton Water Company with the help of her son, William, and daughter, Mary Ann, following the death of James in 1896 (Thomas Wren's 1904 biography of James Scott). When she sold the company is unknown, although in the 1910 U.S. Census Mary lists her occupation as "none".
