Actress. She was an American actress who is credited with making 115 films. Born Johana Barbara Novak, she was the daughter of immigrants from what is today the Czech Republic. The younger sister of actress Eva Novak, her career began when a director saw her teenage photo on the makeup table of her aunt, actress Anne Schafer. She became one of the most popular actresses of the 1910s with movies like "Just Nuts," "The Scarlet Sin," "The White Scar," and "The Innocent Sinner." When the silent movie era was over, she withdrew from her career slowly. She only took part in two movies of the 1930s, "Ghost Town" and "Hollywood Boulevard." In 1942, she made a World War II epic film titled "The Yanks Are Coming." Novak made a fortune in the late 1920s in real estate and film production but lost it all after the 1929 stock market crash. In 1974, she published a cookbook titled "Treasury of Chicken Cooking." She married and soon divorced actor Frank Newburg, and the couple had a daughter.
