Roy married first Nina J. Barber and they had one son, Charles Cortez Horton. Roy married second Mary. He married third Catherine Hogan in Chicago and they had one son, Roy E. Horton.
Roy worked for a time as a civil engineer for International Harvester in Auburn, NY and was transferred to Chicago. He later accepted a position as chief engineer for the Shoreland Hotel on the lake front.
On Friday 18 Jan 1929 he went to the roof of the hotel to make some repairs during a storm. A strong wind tore the top off a water tank hurling it on top of him and crushing his skull.
