This long time citizen of Center Township, farmer, and early in life a shoemaker, after several weeks of illness, finally departed life from lung fever on Sabbath, the third day of November, 1901, at his home west of town. Ever since his visit to a daughter in Iowa, a couple months since, he gradually weakened, and at the age of 78 years, the death summons came. He leaves a widow in stricken health, with two sons and three daughters his survivors. Funeral Tuesday, Rev. W. E. Arnholt, officiating minister.

Hiram S. Berlien, an aged and respected farmer, passed into eternity Sunday morning at 8:45 o'clock. Having lived in the county from the day of his birth there are few persons who were so well known. He returned home sick a few weeks ago from Blissfield, Michigan, where he had gone to visit his sister, Mrs. Hester Berlien. He had a severe cold and was threatened with paralysis of the throat. During the illness that intervened he was conscious to the last and pleased to see his friends. Deceased descended from Anglo-Saxon stock born in Saxony. He was the third child of Abraham Berlien who came from Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1796 and settled in Tuscarawas County, (now Monroe Township, Carrol County, Ohio.) Hiram S. was born on this farm May 3, 1824, and hence was exactly 77 1/2 years of age. The county at the time of his birth was a forest,and bear, deer, and wild turkey were abundant. He was dressed in homespun and assisted his mother to pull and scutch the flax they made then. His nearest school was three miles, and his difficulty in attending hem was increased when at the age of 14 one of his limbs was taken off in a threshing machine. He remained at home until he was 24, assisting on the farm. February, 1852, he was married to the widow with whom he has lived nearly half a century, Miss Helen A. Foster, a native of the county. He then taught school four years and learned shoemaking, working at both occupations twenty years. In 1870 he bought his farm of 65 acres, 1 1/2 miles west of town, and moved there-on. five children were born to them: Annie M., married to Robert Y. McCray of Platte County, Nebraska; Eliza P., married to Andrew Hess of Dellroy; Joseph Milton of Carrollton; Dorinda J., married T. J. McQueen of Loudon Township; and Thomas Foster, who lives on the farm. Mr. Berlien was a democrat all his life and was twice nominated by them for important offices. He had a sunny , jovial disposition and respected by everybody.
On Tuesday services were held at the house, conducted by Rev. W. E. Arnholt, and about 2 o'clock the funeral procession started for Grandview Cemetery. Rev. W. E. Arnholt furnished an obituary since the above was in type from which we extract the following paragraph: "Mr. Berlein died Sunday morning, November 3, 1901, having reached the ripe age of 77 years and 6 months. The family remained unbroken till Mr. Berlein departed, so that there are left to mourn with his aged widow, two sons and three daughters, and nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. The remains were laid to rest in our beautiful Cemetery from his late home, Rev. W. E. Arnholt, officiating pastor. Mr. Berlein, while not an active member of any church, had been baptized in the Lutheran Church by Rev. Rothacker, and thus was a church member, and always claimed to be a follower of and believer in the Lord Jesus! So we may well look to meet him in a holier home. May the God of all peace be the mourner's stay!"
