Henrietta Mahler Burk (1881-1954) – Immigrant ancestor, mother of four, grandmother of five

Henrietta Mahler was born on May 9, 1881, in or near Riga, Latvia [source: husband's US naturalization petition, 1939]. She was the oldest child of Meyer Elias Mahler and Tillie Jacobs Mahler [source: NYC marriage cert, 1906]. In 1885, her father left Eastern Europe to make a new life in New York City [source: Meyer Mahler naturalization index, 1900]. Tillie soon followed, bringing Henrietta and second child David Mahler (1882-1964). The family initially settled in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, home to many immigrants. [Source: US Census 1900]

In 1900, Henrietta was working as a stenographer to support the growing Mahler family. Then her family moved uptown to a nicer apartment in Harlem. In the 1905 NY census, future husband Isaac Burk and his brother were enumerated as boarders in the Mahler family apartment in Harlem. Henrietta married Isaac on June 10, 1906 [source: their marriage cert]. Their oldest three children (Mildred, Harold, and Miriam) were born in Manhattan, where Isaac tried operating a small candy store [source: US Census 1910].

By 1911, Isaac had resumed his career as a trained cabinetmaker, crossing back and forth from New York to Montreal, Canada in search of work [source: US-Canada Border Crossings]. Henrietta followed each time, and their fourth child (Sidney) was born in Montreal in 1914 [source: Quebec birth records, Drouin Collection]. They returned to New York City to settle down in 1915 [source: NY Census 1915].

Both of Henrietta's daughters married in 1937 [source: marriage certs]. During World War II, her two sons enlisted in the U.S. military and were serving overseas when their father Isaac died of a heart attack on October 8, 1943 [source: Isaac death cert and death notice].

After the war, Henrietta and three of her four adult children lived in the same Bronx apartment building. She lived long enough to meet four of her five grandchildren before passing away at the age of 72 on February 9, 1954. - Written by one of her grandchildren in 2021.
