Mr. Mapes was born in the Town of Wallkill, the son of Albert and Frances S. Mapes Mapes. He lived his entire life in Howells, until entering the sanitarium recently.
He had been employed by the Trust Company for the past 10 years. Prior to that he had served as cashier at the Pine Bush National Bank and at the former Merchants National Bank. He was an active member of the Howells Fire Company and a past president of the Historical Society of Middletown and the Wallkill Precinct.
Mr. Mapes was a 60-year trustee of the Howells Congregational Church and a state trustee of the World Christian Endeavor Union. He was to have served as honorary chairman of the State Christian Endeavor Convention to be held at Middletown starting May 28.
Surviving are a brother, Clarence E. Mapes of Bloomingburg road; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lucy W. Mapes of Howells and Mrs. Sarah Mapes of Middletown; four nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Carl Knudsen will officiate at funeral services. Interment will be in Howells Cemetery.
